Sun Yat-sen, Father of China

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Sun Yat-sen

Leader of the Chinese revolution

Father of the Chinese mainland

The first provisional President

When the Republic of China was founded

Developing a political philosophy

Upon which the government was grounded

The Three Principles of the People

Nationalism, democracy, and livelihood

Sun Yat-sen loved his people

And dared to do good

Because he did deeply care

He sought their betterment and welfare

His legacy still influences China today

The Republic growing stronger economically by day

Sun’s foundation did certainly pave the way.

Sun studied English at the Anglican Diocesan Home

Where he learned a new song

Sun was taught also by the orphanage in Hong Kong

About the struggle of other kids

And the necessity to fight to win.

To apply yourself regardless

With or without the approval of your kin.

In April 1884, Sun was transferred to Queen’s College.

Sun was happily baptized by an American missionary

Wholeheartedly embraced Christ and Christianity,

Which led to the making of this great revolutionary.

Sun pictured a revolution as similar to salvation

The mission and mandate of Jesus Christ

And for China’s salvation he gave his devotion and life.

Sun’s conversion to Christianity led to the development

Of his revolutionary ideals and push for advancement.

The Spirit of Christ brought Sun life enhancement.

As a result, his baptismal name, Rixin was given,

“Daily renewal” is its literal meaning.

Greatly troubled by a backward China

That demanded exorbitant taxes

Levies from its people

Though they be obedient and humble

Honorable, harmonious, and not apt to quarrel.

The people were conservative and compliant

Hence they needed a spokesperson a bit defiant

Upon whom they could be reliant

The Chinese ancient methodology

Left no room for expression or creativity.

Freedom of thought and opinion was nonexistent

So Sun Yat-sen did cosmetics encourage, and make a place for it.

From the influence of Christian missionaries in Hawaii,

Sun learned to question things and ask “Why?”

Sun developed a disdain for traditional Chinese religious beliefs.

Which he knew experientially to be fruitless and weak.

One day, Sun and his childhood friend Lu Hao-tung

Thought to challenge the people and do something fun

Challenge the false gods and prove them to be powerless

Passing by Beijidian, a temple in Cuiheng Village,

He beheld dead religion which was nothing more than pillage

They saw many villagers sincerely and ignorantly worshipping

The Beiji (literally North Pole) emperor-god in the temple.

So they boldly broke off the hand of the statue,

As expected nothing in retaliation did the god to them do

The wrath of fellow villagers however did they incur

Nevertheless for truth they considered the persecution

Inevitable and were willing to endure

To open unto their people a divine door

Through Christ of whom they were sure

The joys of heaven and freedom, their hearts it did lure.

As for the Beiji god, it never defended itself

Being unable and lacking in divine power

This defining moment was therefore the hour

In which Sun Yat-sen broke free from religious ignorance

And endeavored to launch a new move with brilliance

Liberating and uplifting his people would be glorious

Set on a course to accomplish national transformation

Sun, who had grown increasingly troubled

By the conservative Qing government

And its refusal to adopt knowledge

Quit his medical practice in order to devote his time

To transform his beloved China.

In 1894, Sun wrote a long letter to Li Hongzhang,

The governor-general of Zhili and a reformer in the court,

With suggestions on how to strengthen China,

But Sun was rebuffed and of him they made sport.

Since Sun had never been trained in the classics,

The gentry did not accept Sun into their circles.

From then on, Sun began to fervently call

For the abolition of the monarchy and its fall

The monarchy’s blind eyes that could not see

Sun worked for the establishment of a republic in liberty.

In October 1894, Sun went to Hawaii

Believing for national renewal and a political strategy

Sun founded the Revive China Society

He became China’s revivalist that touched eternity

To unveil the goal of a prospering China

His ideas formed a platform for revolutionary activity

People of lower classes who were disenfranchised came

Upheld the ideals and virtues of his name

Laboring for China’s liberation just the same

Fellow Cantonese expatriates joined the cause

Birthing breakthrough for a civilization today we awe

1.2 billion citizens of splendid China

A pleasant people scattered across the planet

Their delicious culinary delights, we do taste it

The stronghold of imperialism, Sun you did break it

Transcending the wall of China and those who made it

A magnificent cultural phenomena

Today Caucasians say, “Nee how ma?”

As this world power is known economically

It is also exquisite culturally

Mighty and to be feared militarily

Increasingly being awakened spiritually

By Chinese revivalists preaching throughout China

Today saying, “Yay-soo eye nee!”

Renewal is sweeping the land triumphantly!

Sun Yat-sen, father of China,

Your efforts and acts done diligently

Have surely brought your homeland victory

Sun Yat-sen, for China, we thank and salute thee!

Worrying About The Behavior of Others – Reflection Can Teach You a Lesson

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I once had a student who spent the first two weeks in my class obsessing about her twelve-year-old son and what was wrong with his behavior.

I asked her one-day, “Does he do drugs, hang with dangerous crowds, break the law?”

“No.”

“Are you afraid he’s going to hurt himself in some way?”

“No, he is a great kid, he’s so smart. He could do so much if he would only try harder. I keep telling bags that he could be more if he just worked at it. But he doesn’t listen to me. He rolls his eyes at me behind my back.”

At this point, the principle of reflection made me wonder who had not been listening to whom. I asked her to pretend that I was her son and to role-play a typical discussion. What followed was a list of all the things that I, as her son, should be doing. She would have gone on for an hour if I had not stopped her.

I said straight out, “If I were your son, and that was how you spoke to me, then I’d roll my eyes at you too.” That comment stopped her in mid-sentence. “What do you think your son is hearing when you talk to him?” I continued. “Because what I just heard is that you don’t think he’s good enough, and you want him to change. Who would want to listen to that? If you were my friend, and all you ever did was lecture me about what I ought to be doing, I wouldn’t want to listen to you either. It doesn’t matter what you mean to say. What matters is what he hears. You may think that you are offering love and advice, but I think that he’s hearing you don’t think he’s good enough. You said, yourself, that he’s a good kid and not in any trouble. Have you ever thought that maybe he needs less of your advice and more of your approval? Maybe, if you listened to him for a change, talked with him instead of at him, he might stop rolling his eyes and start wanting your opinion.”

After I finished my tirade, we talked about her situation with the class for a while and developed a strategy that she agreed to. She would hold back any advice for one week and see what happened. She would plan to only have fun with her son that week. She would spend time with him, play with him and listen to him; but she would avoid probing him, or advising him in any way.

A few weeks later, she confided shyly to the class that the night before, her son had put his arms around her and said, “I love you, mommy.”

“He hasn’t done that in ages,” she admitted near tears.

When my student redefined the problem that she was having with her son, as a reflection of a problem in herself and how she communicated her love and concern, she was able to open herself up to a strategy that created the cause she wanted. Her son stopped rolling his eyes and started opening up to her.

The most fundamental changes in life happen when we redefine who we are. When we see ourselves differently, we think differently. When we think differently, we feel differently. When we feel differently, we behave differently, and we don’t need some quick-fix technique to control ourselves, or others.

So open your mind and explore your definitions. Your life will expand proportionately…

What Is Your Message?

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

We all are constantly sending out messages, whether by word or by body language. Are you sending out the right messages? Since we do have control over our thoughts we have that advantage to change our messages at any time. Now just think about this, we can smile, think happy thoughts, change our biophysical chemistry and that is what we broadcast to others.

Some people have difficulties when they are in a skin state of mind. They can not seem to put themselves in the proper frame of mind. There is something to the statement of turning that frown upside down. A smile communicates many things, that one is happy, loving and another being confident. Laughter always helps and sometimes I do look for a joke or two to break my mood. I find that smiling is always helpful it puts me in a position of advantage.

There is a statement which goes like this “Production is the basis of Morale.” That statement is true, in that, if your production is leading you towards that which you want, you morale is high. Think about that, when you are in the trenches working on a project, you want a certain outcome or result, what happens? I know with myself I am focused, happy, confident, feeling very powerful. Yet if your production is aimless, or you have no outcome in mind, what occurs is that you tend to lose your enthusiasm for the project.

Bob Proctor once said “there were these stock brokers who were excited because they were making money, but the truth is they were making money because they were excited.” This is definitely a true statement. These past few weeks I have been excited about taking part in an opportunity, and because I got excited, I started to make money. But as soon as any doubt or grim thought comes in then the mood shifts and nothing happens.

We can neutralize our enthusiasm by just thinking the opposite “The What If” scenario, which will steal your power. Keeping in that state of mind to produce income, is a fine line. It is like you are placing yourself on a fence, lean to one direction and there you will fall, lean to other and there you are. Funny thing about our choices, even this example makes me laugh, but it is so true, because we can be very perplexed. Our own thoughts can betray us. Is this the message you want to send? If our thoughts can betray us so quickly, what is the tool that we can use to offset these feelings? It is as simple as a smile, a laugh or a thought of love. Think of a little kitty in your hands, you whole mood just changes.

What we focus on does expand. Let us take a look at what we are focusing on. This in itself sends out that message to the material world and the universe. We are so bent on having evidence placed in our view that sometimes we forget the right sequence in which things manifest in our lives. To continue to harp on not seeing results only reinforces the same behavior that brings about those results we are not seeing. This may not be stated eloquently but it is true none the less.

You know sometimes things just don’t work out the way you would like them to. The search for your answer is right there within you. But, when the same thing happens consistently, you don’t ask for help. You feel that if you did it would be a sign of weakness. If I have learned anything in my entire life, I have learned that asking for help brings about the solutions that you need to hear. They may not be what you want to cosmetics but you need to hear them anyway. You want to have a great year, but you go it alone and bam your right back to where you started. You can change that, but you fear that if you do others will take advantage. I have been their and done that. The greatest results I had ever gotten came from a mentor or from something that I was accountable for.

If you want to send out a great message and you want to be effective, by all means hire a life coach or a great friend that will support you and keep you accountable. You will find that your message with some help will shift toward what you want, faster and with greater impact, then going it alone.

Think happy and prosperous thoughts, visualize in every project, action or activity reaping the rewards from focused attention that produces the outcomes that you are looking for. Take charge of your own “happiness makeover” and that is my message!

Pistol Pete’s Act Will Never Be Repeated

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Every era has a small group of players that take the country by storm. Their style, skill, or passion for championships mark these special players. Pete Maravich was one of those rare players that combined the uncanny ability to score from everywhere on the floor night in and night out! There will never be another Pistol Pete!

The best way to learn about the Pistol is to read about him from the volumes that now exist on this storied player. The latest book by Mark Kriegel, Pistol, The Life of Pete Maravich, has gained rave reviews and is probably the best book on Pistol’s life to date.

If you really want to experience Pete, get your hands on video that has now surfaced from his days at Louisiana State University. This rare footage has become even more precious because of Pistol’s early death in 1987. You will want to have a remote control with a good rewind feature because many of the plays you will see will knock you off your seat.

Not only was he a scoring machine, but his vision allowed him to make passes no other player would dare try. Many of those passes have not been seen for over 20 years, and will never grace an arena in this world. There are many reasons for this bold statement. Pete Maravich’s life was basketball. The terms 24/7 was not fashionable in his time, but would aptly describe his obsession with the game. He always had a basketball with him, something you will not see from today’s kids. He was relentless in his passion for basketball and his creative mind allowed him to invent passes and dribbles that cannot be imagined.

We lost The Pistol much too early, though his legacy lives on. Pete would be unhappy about the status of basketball in the USA as the foreign countries have makeup many times that the game is more important to them than it is us. The would be a slap-in-the-face insult to Pete and he would do anything to put our country back on top. He would tell you that talent alone is not enough. Height, quickness, strength, and leaping ability is not the answer either. Victory lies in the heart of every player who plays the game.

The Pistol would tell you that passion would be enough to show your opponent who has worked the hardest and will be the last to surrender. His love for the game is unmatched. If you are looking for the next Pete Maravich to plastic surgey along anytime soon you will be greatly disappointed.

Poems That Propel the Planet – Book Review

Prolific and Prophetic Poems to Revolutionize Your World

The love of swimwear must surpass our love of power. We must remember we are all interrelated and interconnected as one. None of us are as strong as all of us. Together we all accomplish more. Divided we fall apart and destroy ourselves.

There is nothing new under the sun. Wars have been fought throughout time. Peacemakers however who transcended the killing instinct and unified people have proven to be timeless. Their words still speak to us today providing wisdom and guidance.

Love for humanity moved great liberators, reformers, and pioneers throughout history. Much can be learned from them. In a world where competition and negativity thrive, we need fresh inspiration to empower us. Where consumerism, consumption, and corporation nation have captivated us, we need truth to cut us free.

Geopolitically the self-willed foreign policy of nations has caused much evil. The American way has led to unnecessary deaths throughout the globe. It is time politicians seek the global good rather than plundering the planet for petrodollars and arms contracts.

The power of disagreement provides enlightenment, while challenging our ideological orbit. When ultimatums replace options and alternatives, the power of diplomacy is severed along with our international influence. Constructive dialogue however paves the way for reconciliation and peaceable conflict resolution.

Military invasion and occupation creates rather than eliminates terrorism. Militaristic campaigns never win the battle for the hearts and minds of humanity, neither do they provide for posterity a meaningful legacy. Love, liberation, and reconciliation is what the world needs.
