Scientists in India have shown how curcumin (a compound derived from turmeric) and capsaicin (a compound found in chilies) work to prevent gallstone formation.

80 % of all gall stones are known as cholesterol stones. As their name implies they consist primarily of cholesterol crystals. The other 20% are known as pigmented stones. The two different types arise from different underlying pathologies.

Cholesterol stones are formed when cholesterol crystallizes in the gall bladder. They then either continue to grow or, if small enough, are flushed into the intestines with the bile. The initiation or inhibition of the crystallization process concerns the concentration of cholesterol as well as the presence or absence of certain types of protein in the bile.

A number of factors increase the risk of gall stone formation:

• Diet: A diet high in saturated fat (particularly animal fat) increases cholesterol in the bile while a diet low in dietary fiber reduces gall bladder emptying. These two dietary factors increase the risk of gallstone development.
• Gender: Women are twice as likely to develop gall stones as men. This is because estrogen increases the amount of cholesterol in the bile and inhibits gall bladder emptying.
• Genetics: Gallstones run in families and certain ethnic groups such as Native Americans have a higher than normal incidence of gallstones.
• Weight: Overweight and obesity increase the risk of gall stone formation, especially in women.
• Weight loss: Rapid weight loss that occurs in crash dieting increases the amount of cholesterol in the bile and slows gall bladder emptying.
• Age: People over the age of 60 are more likely to develop gall stones.
• Diabetes: The high circulating levels of fatty acids that occur in diabetic individuals makes them more susceptible to gallstone formation.

Researchers have found that adding curcumin (from turmeric) and capsaicin (from chilies) to the diet can help prevent the development of gall stones in these high risk groups. These two spice-derived compounds work by reducing the amount of cholesterol in the bile and inhibiting the crystallization process that is the first step in gallstone development.

By this means they can reduce the risk of gallstone development fourfold – even in high risk individuals.

Thus far, chilies and turmeric are the only two spices that have been tested in relation to gallstone formation. However other spices such as fenugreek, garlic, ginger, cinnamon and coriander have been shown to reduce several of the other factors that contribute to gallstone development.

Scientists have already shown that spices can help to prevent conditions such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes.

Now, not only can we add gallstones to that steadily growing list but, we have even more incentive to include many more of these tasty foods in our diet.

So how did Reznor get to this high and mighty position? He didn’t start a band in high school like so many other rock stars, he was in the marching band instead. Not exactly a cool way to start out. It wasn’t until he went off to college to study computer engineering that he got himself into a band called Option 30. It didn’t last long and he eventually dropped out of college to pursue his musical career.

Trent spent the mid 80’s finding his place as a musician. In Cleveland, Ohio, he performed as the keyboardist for a band called The Innocent. Still searching for the right place for himself, he left the band after recording just one album. Another local Cleveland band, the Exotic Birds, was the benefactor of Trents talents after he left The Innocent.

During this time, Trent also spent some time working in the Right Track Studio in Cleveland, Ohio. It wasn’t exactly a dream music gig that he landed. Trent was hired as the assistant engineer and handyman for the studio. This job had a perk that Trent took full advantage of. After hours, he had access to the studio where he recorded demos for the future Nine Inch Nails album, ‘Pretty Hate Machine’.

One of the difficulties Reznor had with recording these demos was he had no band. He really couldn’t find anyone that could play the music to his standards either. So, following in Prince’s footsteps, Reznor took on the task of being a one man band. He wrote and sang all of the lyrics as well as played and recorded all of the instruments himself, except the drums.

Reznor specifically chooses musicians for tours depending on what songs are on the playlist. Since NIN music is so unique and Trent wants it to be his way, it’s not easy to find people to play with. In alot of ways this setup seems to be more creative than the way bands usually go about it. With only one man in control of the creation of the music, there aren’t any arguments, discussions or dramas. Seems to clear the air for all of that creative energy to flow and it comes out in the music at the end.

Trent didn’t have huge aspirations for NIN at the time. In fact, he simply wanted to record one 12 inch vinyl single of the band on a small European label. ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ far outdid anything he ever expected. It spent over 110 weeks on the Billboard 200 and became one of the first independently released records to gain Platinum Certification. Videos for “Down in It” and “Head Like a Hole” made it into living rooms everywhere when they appeared on MTV.

Despite not having a consistent set of band members, NIN began touring in in 1990 as an opening act for other alternative rock bands. NIN then set out on a world tour that ended at the first Lollapalooza festival in 1991. Not surprisingly, Trent’s on-stage antics and the amazing music were both a huge hit.

The EP, ‘Broken’, released in 92, was much harder than the ‘Pretty Hate Machine’ album. It won Nine Inch Nails two Grammy awards for the singles “Happiness In Slavery” and “Wish”. The video from “Happiness In Slavery” was banned nearly everywhere because of its content. In fact, many of Nine Inch Nails videos from this time are considered a bit too rough for some.

In 1994, NIN released their second full-length album entitled “The Downward Spiral”. It hit the billboard charts and soared straight to #2. To this day it’s the top charting Nine Inch Nails album. During WoodStock ‘94, the band, continuing their Self Destruct tour, performed in true WoodStock style, in the mud. The pay-per-view event was broadcast to up to 24 million homes, not to mention the live audience. This is the performance that truly shoved NIN into the mainstream.

Nine Inch Nails next two albums, ‘Fragile’, released in 1999 and ‘With Teeth’ from 2005 both debuted at the number one position on the Billboard Top 200. And of course, both of these albums were followed up with successful tours. All the while, Trent was doing battle with his drug and alcohol addictions. Both albums experienced delays in the production, and the blame was solely on Reznor.

2007 brought the release of a new album with a whole new sound for Nine Inch Nails. The ‘Year Zero’ album spawned the singles “Survivalism” and “Capital G”. Both singles appeared on the playlists of rock radio stations across the U.S. The concept album tells the story of a futuristic landscape and the characters that inhabit it. Heavy electronics, grinding beats and Trents characteristic crooning appealed to NIN fans and critics alike.

Recently, Reznor released another concept album entitled ‘Ghosts I – IV’, an eery collection of instrumental work. Nine of the original tracks were made available as a free download from the NIN website. Following in the footsteps of that successful venture, another album ‘The Slip’ was also released as a free download. Trent’s passion for his music comes out in all the right ways on both these albums.

Anna Nicole Smith is a prime example of a fact: It’s often later than you think. In her case, she probably did not realize that she would not live to the age of 40. She probably did not attach great importance to having an updated will or estate plan.

However, the latter stage of life is simply not the best time to plan. The best time to engage in estate planning is when you are young and healthy. Then as age sets in, or as life circumstances change, the plan should then be updated.

Anna Nicole Smith’s death, and her estate “plan,” provides instructive lessons for all of us concerning our own estate plans:

Lesson 1: You never know when…

This is self-evident. Barring the autopsy report concluding that her death was a result of suicide, it is doubtful that Smith knew that she would never see her 40th birthday.

This highlights the fact that the best time to engage in estate and financial planning is when we are healthy. Yet, it’s very easy to wait — and to simply not think about it until we have to. But we never really know when that crisis will occur.

Remember: Planning for the future does not make it happen any sooner, or later.

Lesson 2: Keep it current.

Smith’s will shows that it was prepared before two major events in her life: Before the death of her son, Daniel, and before the birth of her daughter, Dannielynn. But her 2001 will made no provision for Dannielynn.

In fact, Smith’s will apparently disinherits any future children, arguably including Dannielynn. The first Article of the will provides that “I have intentionally omitted to provide for my spouse and other heirs, including future spouses and children and other descendents now living and those hereafter born or adopted…”

Little did Smith realize in July 2001, when she executed her will

(1) that her son Daniel would predecease her (he died in late 2006),

(2) that she would give birth to a daughter Dannielynn,

(3) that she would not survive her daughter, and

(4) that the United States Supreme Court would ultimately revive her claim to her late husband’s estate, estimated in the amount of $474 million.

Again, the lesson: Keep your estate plan current.

Lesson 3: An outdated estate plan will have unintended consequences.

Given the language in her will, including the clauses specifically omitting gifts to those not named in the will, it is possible that daughter Dannielynn will not receive any part of Smith’s estate. However, on the other hand, it is also possible (but not certain) that Dannielynn’s rights to the estate might be established through California’s “Pretermission Statute” [Probate Code Section 21620].

It is highly unlikely that Smith truly wanted to disinherit her future daughter when she prepared her will. Unfortunately, however, disinheritance is one possible outcome given the wording of her will. If nothing else, the unnecessary ambiguity almost guarantees extended litigation.

Failing to plan your estate in a timely manner almost guarantees unintended consequences.

Lesson 4: How about your child’s guardian?

One major purpose for having a will is to nominate a guardian for your children. Smith nominated a guardian for Daniel, but of course did not nominate a guardian for her daughter Dannielynn.

Given the fact that paternity will probably be established (from a bevy of potential dads, I might add), the lack of a named guardian will probably not be a problem in Dannielynn’s case.

However, even if your estate is not worth $474 million — and few are — it is still worthwhile to have a will. Most of us will still need to identify a guardian for our children.

And who knows what else life has in store for you? Again, keep it current.

They sound like characters from an action video game – Orange Monster, Black Samurai, White Knight – but in fact, they’re three of the hippest watches made by Seiko and are much sought-after by wealthy enthusiasts and collectors, particularly in Asia.

This may come as a surprise, but Seiko watches are gaining an image as hip and collectable. In many parts of the world, the Seiko watch brand has been seen as reliable, but unremarkable. But look closely and an exceptional story begins to emerge.

Seiko burst onto the international watchmaking scene in 1969, when it caught off-guard and almost destroyed the Swiss watch industry with the launch of the Astron, the world’s first battery-powered quartz wristwatch. The Astron was more accurate and durable than the hand-wound mechanical Swiss watches costing several times as much. Overnight, demand for mechanical watches plummeted.

Many watchmaking innovations over the past three decades are probably due to Seiko: the first quartz watch; first quartz LCD with six-digit display (hours, minutes and seconds); first calculator watch; first quartz with day and date; first quartz chronograph (date, stopwatch and alarm); first TV watch; first thermic quartz watch (powered by the wearer’s body heat); first kinetic quartz watch (powered by the wearer’s movement)… and the list goes on. Seiko watches have been at the center of watch evolution, and its influence extends far beyond watchmaking: the LCDs in your clock radio, microwave oven or CD player all owe a debt to innovations made by Seiko.

Seiko, in fact, has been the innovator of so many industry “firsts” that it’s difficult to name them all. Recently, for example, was the 40th anniversary of the first quartz chronometer, launched at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Used to time marathons, it brought unprecedented precision to sports timekeeping, being accurate to within 0.2 seconds a day. Just a few years ago saw the 10th anniversary of the world’s first kinetic chronograph, the quartz watch powered by the movement of the wearer’s wrist, thereby eliminating the need for a battery. To celebrate the event, Seiko launched the Arctura Kinetic Chronograph, which takes kinetic movements to a new level of precision, being accurate to within 15 seconds per month.

While innovation and continuity rarely go together, Seiko has both. The company, founded in Tokyo by Kintaro Hattori in 1881, is still a family business. Although part of the business is a publicly traded company, the current president of Seiko Watch Corporation is the founder’s great-grandson, Shinji Hattori, who is also the nephew of the current honorable chairman.

Given Seiko’s history of producing revolutionary products and ideas that are emulated everywhere, you might expect that it would enjoy a reputation similar to that of Apple or Sony. Yet many people don’t few even realize that Seiko is the world’s leading manufacturer of watches, selling over 14 million watches annually. It also annually sells more than 350 million quartz movements to other watch makers. Here again, Seiko has revolutionized the watch making industry. Previously, only Swiss and Japanese companies could make reliable watches. But now anybody can simply add a dial, case and strap to a Seiko quartz movement and sell it under their own brand name. Although it doesn’t want to name companies it provides movements to, Seiko’s quartz movements are at the heart of many watches sold by some of the biggest name brands in fashion and sports.

Seiko doesn’t really get the respect it deserves. The product quality is phenomenal, but there’s a misperception of their brand.

Some people believe Seiko offers too many budget-price models. Cheap, in the public’s mind, means poor quality even if that’s not the case. Also, Seiko’s watch designs change too often. Some of the best Seiko watch designs never get the chance to develop a following, whereas the best Rolex or Omega watches stay in production for 20 or 30 years. For collectors, it’s a problem, and collectors add value to brands.

One Seiko executive recently stated the company is in the process of refining its brand. “We have very strong brand awareness, with around 70 per cent recognition of Seiko as a watchmaker. But there was some confusion about the brand. The company’s pioneering history, our dedication to producing elegant watches, wasn’t really understood. We’re proud of the company, so we decided to streamline and focus the branding, and emphasize our legacy.”

Until recently, regional Seiko companies sold the brand according to local tastes. But just recently the Japanese parent, Seiko Corporation, decided to overhaul its branding and marketing strategies. The company’s position is that customer perception of the brand should be the same in Tokyo, London, Paris, New York or Sydney. That means building a brand image that conveys core values, no matter what the market. Over a period of several months Seiko has revamped its public profile, from billboard and TV advertising to in-store presentation and packaging.

So far, the strategy has been successful. In line with company expectations, Seiko is gradually being seen as a premium watch brand. Not just trustworthy and reliable, but a real status brand. Technological innovation is at the heart of company, but Seiko watches have a certain refinement that they’re trying to emphasize also.

So, how might Seiko improve its brand status? Being the largest watch company, with an excellent line of products and constant innovation, perhaps Seiko could start by being a little less modest about their product.

Then, inject something unexpected into your ensemble with a colorful, funky-patterned bag. But try to keep the lines clean, which will make the bag timeless. There’s nothing worse than dropping tons of money for a trendy bag that will “be out” in about a month.
